Feature differences between Broadcom and Mindspeed VoIP modules

This article summarises some of the functionality differences between the Broadcom and Mindspeed VoIP modules when used with a Dialogic IMG Integrated Media Gateway.  This information is provided for convenience, as a summary of information provided in the IMG documentation. 

Mindspeed only features

F-0712 SIP support for G.726-32 (RFC 3555, section 4.1.6) is available on Mindspeed modules only. It is not supported on the older Broadcom modules.

Clear Channel Codec is supported on Mindspeed VoIP modules only. If a Broadcom VoIP module is being used, the call will be rejected with a 488 Nack which is the same behavior as all dynamic codecs. (iLBC, AMR, EVRC, G.729e, and G.726).

Profiles 6 and 7 are supported on the Mindspeed modules only. Broadcom modules do not support Profiles 6 and 7.

GSM-FR - Conforms to GSM 06.10 Specifications. Used in GSM Digital Mobile Phone Network. Supported only on the Mindspeed VoIP modules.

RTP Source Port Validate feature is supported on the Mindspeed VoIP modules only using software release 10.5.1 and above.

SRTP is supported only on Mindspeed VoIP modules.

RTP loopback on same module is only available on Mindspeed VoIP modules.

Broadcom only features

Mindspeed VoIP modules do not support tone detection for the following wireless codecs:
AMR
EVRC
GSM-FR
GSM-EFR
Clear Channel

Features available on both Broadcom and Mindspeed

F-1611 Fax Type support for "Disabled" Mode is to disable Modem detection, which is used to improve fax detection - Mindspeed and Broadcom are supported. This was added in software 10.5.1 ER2 and is backwards compatible.

Initial Media Inactivity Timer / Media Inactivity Timer - Supported on both Mindspeed and Broadcom VoIP modules.

How to determine if I have a Mindspeed VoIP module?

You can easily check this in ClientView. Click on the VoIP Resource object under Physical IMG -> Facility. On the right side check the "Module Configuration Profile". If that option has the word "Picasso" in it, then you have a Mindspeed module.
