Method 2 - Recommended
Set up a TFTP server with the proper configuration files in place.
Verify that your phone is pointing to your TFTP server. To do this, press Menu -> Network Settings -> TFTP Server. Your TFTP Server address should be in this field.
To modify the TFTP Server address, scroll down in the Network Settings menu and set the Alternate TFTPsetting to YES. You can then scroll up and modify the TFTP Server address.
Be sure that your TFTP server is hosting the Cisco firmware files and configuration files. Look here for details about the required files.
The configuration files on your TFTP server will consist of a SIPDefault.cnf file which includes settings to be distributed to all phones, and a SIP_MAC_.cnf (__MAC__ needs to be replaced with the phone's MAC address) file for each phone's unique settings. You should place the DIALPLAN.xml file in the same directory.
Modify the SIPDefault.cnf file to replace all instances of the following:
YOUR.PBX.IP.ADDRESS
YOUR_TIMEZONE
Rename SIP__MAC__.cnf to include the MAC address of your specific phone (e.g.,SIP00075006D8AE.cnf). One of these files must exist for each phone.
In each phone's cnf file, replace all instances of the following:
YOUR_EXTENSION
YOUR_EXTENSION_PASSWORD
Reboot your phone after any changes to the configuration files.
Quick Reboot trick: Press *, 6, and Settings simultaneously.
