IMG 1010 - Hardware Overview (DS3)

Overview:

A DS3 line (also known as a T-3) is an ultra high-speed connection capable of transmitting data at rates up to 45 Mbps. A DS3 line is equal to approximately 672 regular voice-grade telephone lines and supports a DS3 signaling interface which is bipolar with Bit 3 Zero Substitution (B3ZS). The DS3 interface is a 75 ohm coax cable and must be made with true 75 ohm cable and connectors.

Previously, the DS3 interface supported the T1 protocol only. As of software 10.5.1, support for the E1 protocol over DS3 line has been added. The IMG 1010 now supports either T1 or E1 protocol but not both. The IMG 1010 can be set up to support either T1 or E1 Protocol based on the value of the Host Flag setting in the dhcpd.conf file. See IMG 1010 - Setting Host Flags for more information on setting host flags. Below is information on span/channel support for either E1 or T1.

In software version 10.5.2 the concept of N+1 redundancy was added. The IMG 1010 equipped with a DS3 interface can now be configured to operate in an N+1 scheme where up to six IMG 1010 nodes with standard DS3 I/O's can be backed up with one IMG 1010 DS3 "Backup"node. In this system, if any one of the IMG 1010's in this configuration fails, the "Backup" DS3 node will take over and the processing of calls will be switched to the "Backup" node. The Backup Node I/O interface has multiple BNC connectors that are wired in a redundancy scheme to the other six Primary nodes. The Backup node is used as a backup system only. The "Backup" is sitting in the network and is ready to take over all configuration parameters from one of the Primary IMG 1010's in the event of a failure.

T1 Protocol on DS3 line (1.544 Mbps)

  • Supports up to 672 DS3 Channels (28 Spans * 24 DS0's)

  • Supports configuring 4 signaling spans as well (4 Spans * 24 DS0's)

E1 Protocol on DS3 line (2.048 Mbps)

  • Supports up to 672 DS3 Channels (21 Spans * 32 DS0's)

  • Supports configuring 3 signaling spans as well (3 Spans * 32 DS0's)

The IMG supports a total of 768 ports, therefore along with the DS3 interface you can configure the signaling spans as well.
