Phones - Registering Cisco Phones with Switchvox

This article assumes your phones are already configured to use the SIP protocol and have a connection to a TFTP server.

IMPORTANT: Switchvox cannot be held responsible for any damage or misconfiguration to your phones caused by these instructions. Updating the firmware or configuring the phones to incorrect files can cause the current configuration to clear out. Flashing your phones or the configuration of your phones is done at your own risk and is not supported by Switchvox.

There are 2 different methods for configuring a SIP ready Cisco 7940/7960 to your Switchvox System.

Method 1 - Not recommended

This method is not recommended because of the possibility of configuration resets, and the lack of central management.

In this method, you enter all of your configuration parameters through the menus on the phone. When modifying necessary settings through the phone, you will first need to unlock the configuration options: Press Menu -> Select Unlock Config. The default password is cisco.

Navigate to Settings -> Sip Configuration -> Line 1 Settings. Then configure the collowing

  • Name: (extension number)

  • Authentication Name: (extension number)

  • Authentication Password: (Common Settings Password)

  • Proxy Address: (IP of your PBX)

  • Proxy Port: 5060

Method 2 - Recommended

  • Set up a TFTP server with the proper configuration files in place.

  • Verify that your phone is pointing to your TFTP server. To do this, press Menu -> Network Settings -> TFTP Server. Your TFTP Server address should be in this field.

  • To modify the TFTP Server address, scroll down in the Network Settings menu and set the Alternate TFTPsetting to YES. You can then scroll up and modify the TFTP Server address.

  • Be sure that your TFTP server is hosting the Cisco firmware files and configuration files. Look here for details about the required files.

  • The configuration files on your TFTP server will consist of a SIPDefault.cnf file which includes settings to be distributed to all phones, and a SIP_MAC_.cnf (__MAC__ needs to be replaced with the phone's MAC address) file for each phone's unique settings. You should place the DIALPLAN.xml file in the same directory.

  • Modify the SIPDefault.cnf file to replace all instances of the following:

    • YOUR.PBX.IP.ADDRESS

    • YOUR_TIMEZONE

  • Rename SIP__MAC__.cnf to include the MAC address of your specific phone (e.g.,SIP00075006D8AE.cnf). One of these files must exist for each phone.

  • In each phone's cnf file, replace all instances of the following:

    • YOUR_EXTENSION

    • YOUR_EXTENSION_PASSWORD

  • Reboot your phone after any changes to the configuration files.

    • Quick Reboot trick: Press *, 6, and Settings simultaneously.

The attached sample configuration files were based on the following example:

  • PBX IP: 192.168.1.50

  • Extension: 101 / Extension Password: 101

  • Timezone: PST

These sample configuration files include the very basic parameters required for registering a Cisco phone to a Switchvox for standard usage and assumes all other settings are set with factory defaults. Additional settings may be found through Cisco Support. Settings in the SIPDefault.cnf file can also be placed in a SIP_MAC_.cnf file if you want a particular phone to have settings that override the default.
