Switchvox Cloud - What are recommended router settings for Switchvox Cloud installations?

The following are suggested for Switchvox Cloud installations. However, if they do not reflect the same hardware, firmware, version, make or model of equipment you are configuring for your network, contact support for additional information.

  • Avoid Double-NATing (Double-Routing). Eliminate or bridge any superfluous routers or modem/router combinations in your system. If you need to put your modem/router combination in bridge mode, contact your ISP for assistance. If bridging is not possible, try putting the second router in the first router's DMZ.

  • Allow SIP, UDP, and RTP protocols. These are protocols used to send and receive traffic. If these protocols are behind a firewall, it will interfere with VOIP traffic in the case of some enterprise-level routers such as Sonicwall devices:

  • Set WAN -> LAN policy rule to allow traffic from the IP address of your hosted PBX. If you do not know this IP address or cannot find it, call DCS support.

  • Set LAN -> WAN policy rule to allow traffic out to DCS servers.  This rule should include the IP address of your hosted PBX, as well.

NOTE: All critical traffic is carried in UDP packets.

  • Disable SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection). SPI allows the router to approve or deny any information packets that flow through it for security reasons. Disabling SPI prevents the router from incorrectly identifying VOIP traffic as a security risk.

  • Disable SIP ALG (Application Level Gateway) and/or SIP Transformations. These security features can prevent traffic from flowing properly. On Cisco routers this is called SIP Inspection and can be disabled with the command "no inspect sip" or "no fixup protocol sip 5060".

  • Disable any VOIP-specific functions. Often networking equipment is customized for VOIP. However, in these cases, equipment is customized in a way that interferes with DCS traffic. Ultimately, the DCS system does not require specific VOIP-supporting functions.

Ensuring these settings are in place should resolve most of your router issues.
