Analog Troubleshooting Basics

There are two types of analog lines used in Switchvox:

FXO:

  • receives power from the telco

  • Modules are colored red

  • generally comes from telco and carries calls to the PBX

FXS:

  • provides power to analog devices

  • Modules are colored green

  • generally runs from the PBX to an analog phone or fax machine

Basic troubleshooting:

On FXO lines check under Server -> Diagnostics -> Connection Status to see the channel status of any FXO lines. If they show red alarm either the lines are not connected securely or power is not being provided from the telco. To check for port or module issues you can connect one of the lines to an analog phone and check for dial tone to verify power.

On FXS lines the status under connection status will always show green since the card is providing power. If a device connected to an FXS line is not functioning you can connect the line to an analog phone and check for dial tone. The analog card provides power to FXS through a MOLEX power connector from the card to the motherboard, if you have no dial tone during this test the connector may either be disconnected or not connected securely.

When troubleshooting occasionally you will need to move the modules on the card. To do so:

  1. Power off the Switchvox and remove the power cable.

  2. Remove the Analog card from the PCI slot inside the switchvox

  3. Physically remove the FXO or FXS modules

  4. Re-seat the Modules in the desired configuration, reconnecting the MOLEX adapter if the module is FXS.

  5. Replace the Analog card in the PCI slot.

  6. Reconnect power and Start up Switchvox.

Anytime you remove and reseat a card and modules you will need to scan the Analog card. Go to Server -> Maintenance -> Telephony Cards. Delete the card appearing in the system. Once the card is deleted select Scan for New Devices. The Analog card should appear.
