Switchvox - When calling from a mobile phone music on hold has low quality

When someone complains about the sound quality of music on hold when calling from a mobile phone remind them that the codecs and processing routines on your mobile phones are extremely optimized towards human speech. They will throw out any sound that it doesn't think is speech in order to both conserve network bandwidth and to cancel out noise.

Music, especially at a low volume, gets thrown out by the codec. A test one can preform is replace the music on hold with a file of human speech or conversation.  Compare the quality of music on hold with "voice on hold" to eliminate the mobile phone as the source of the problem.

To replace the music on hold with a file that is just speech:

  1. Navigate to the Tools drop down menu

  2. Select Music On Hold option

  3. In the Add New option in the top right hand coroner select upload Song and then click go

  4. Click the field next to Song to Upload and then select the file from you computer (if you don't have a file you can record one using the sound manager) then click upload.

  5. On the next page remove the other songs so only the speech is there.

  6. Call into the queue from cell phone you will hear a drastic improvement of quality.
