Updating to Switchvox 8.0.1

This article describes Switchvox version 8.0.1 (103849).

This version requires version 7.9.5.2 (103413). You must be on version 7.9.5.2 before you can see and update to version 8.0.1.

Important Information

This Version Requires Version 7.9.5.2

This version requires version 7.9.5.2 (103413). You must be on version 7.9.5.2 before you can see and update to version 8.0.1.

If you are currently on a version prior to version 7.9 and updating to 7.9.5.2 before going on to 8.0.1, it is important that you stop at version 7.9.5.2 and allow the voicemail migration process to complete. There is an alert in the Switchvox Admin area that is displayed while the process is running, and the alert declares when the process is complete. Once the process is complete, you can dismiss that alert and update to version 8.0.1. In the unlikely event that the migration process does not complete successfully, please contact technical support before updating to version 8.0.1.

Supported Switchvox Appliances

Only the current Switchvox appliances are supported. See Switchvox Appliances that Support Version 8.x.

For information about Switchvox in a virtualized environment, see Can I use Switchvox in a Virtualized Environment? The minimum requirements have changed for version 8.x.

Six Gigabytes Disk Space Required for the Update

The update to 8.0.1 includes extensive changes to the operating system, and requires a minimum of six gigabytes available disk space.

Softphones

Sangoma Talk for Mobile and Sangoma Phone for Desktop

Softphones no longer need their own extension, and the email address required to use the Sangoma Talk app is now entered in the extension's Profile information, in the Login Email Address field. There's more information about this in the New Features section below.

Legacy Switchvox Softphone for Mobile

The legacy mobile softphone app is deprecated in 8.0.1. The app will not work against 8.0.1, and cannot be assigned to a SIP extension. Sangoma Talk is the supported mobile softphone. See Sunsetting Switchvox Mobile Softphone.

Telephony Cards

Version 8.0.1 does not offer support for telephony cards. We recommend that you move to a VOIP Gateway or  a SIP Provider. See Can I Update to Switchvox 8.x with Telephony Cards in the Appliance?

D-Series Sangoma Phone Apps

Tools > Sangoma Phone Apps is no longer available in 8.0.1. However, if you already had phone apps installed on your D-Series phones, this menu item will still be available. Once you delete all the apps, the menu will no longer be available.

Faxing

In 8.0.1, Faxing is not available. In the upcoming version 8.0.2, incoming Fax is supported but printing to Fax and outgoing Fax is not available.

New Features and Enhancements

Softphones are Automatically Assigned to Users

Desktop and Mobile Softphones are available for every user (every SIP Phone extension), without the admin specifically 'assigning' a phone app to the user.

  • Windows and macOS desktop apps: Every SIP extension is able to use the desktop softphone app, Sangoma Phone. That cannot be disabled, it's available for all SIP Phone extensions.

  • iOS and Android apps: If the Switchvox admin enters an email address in the new Login Email Address field for a user, that user will be able to configure the mobile softphone app, Sangoma Talk, using that email address. The user enters that email address into the app, to receive a configuration email message.

  • For users who existed before an update to 8.0.1

    • Their Additional Phone extensions that hosted their apps are removed.

    • Their Personal Call Rules with an existing Ring All or Cascade action in 7.9.5.2 will continue to function the same way after the update. Existing actions that ring a mobile or desktop softphone are translated into actions that ring their new "hidden" softphone extensions.

    • A rule set that did not have a Ring All or Cascade action in 7.9.5.2, now rings the Main extension and both softphones, where previously it only rang the Main phone. Ringing the Main phone and both the softphones is the new default behavior in 8.0.1 for new extensions.

    • If a softphone app is assigned to the user's Main extension, after the update to 8.0.1 the Main extension will not have a phone assigned to it, but their Call Rules are changed to correctly ring the app. If you are using external apps such as Outlook or Salesforce, you will need to attach a desk phone to the Main extension, for click-to-dial in those apps. The apps can only call the Main phone for the first leg of click-to-dial.

    • Sangoma Phone desktop softphone users should ensure they are using the most recent version of the app. And, if a user is experiencing any calling issues, please check that the Settings: Make Calls With dropdown is set to Desktop Softphone.

    • Sangoma Talk mobile app users' email addresses will be entered into the Login Email Address field automatically, during the update to 8.0.1. We highly recommend that you use the most recent version of the app.

  • Newly created extensions will now default to ringing the apps along with the desk phone that is attached to the Main extension. The user can change this, if they prefer not to ring all their phones.

  • Important Information About the New Login Email Address Field

    • If there is no email address in Login Email Address, the user will not be able to configure the Sangoma Talk app.

    • The new email address field is separate from the old email address field. The old email address field is now found in the User Web Suite and only used for email notifications of unread voicemail.

    • The Login Email Address field (along with the old email address field) is now included in the CSV file that can create and/or update SIP Phone extensions.

    • To configure the app, the user enters this same email address into the address prompt in the app. That will trigger the email message to be sent, and they can check email on the mobile phone to set the Sangoma Talk app to their extension.

    • If users are experiencing trouble setting their app, please click the button Refresh Connection to Sangoma Cloud, on the Setup > Extension Settings page.

Extensions Can be Exported to CSV

A new Export Extensions button (Setup > Manage) downloads a CSV file with the information for the existing SIP Phone extensions. This contains the same columns and headers of the CSV file that can be used to import new extensions and modify existing extensions.

See SETUP-EXTENSIONS-MANAGE-IMPORT-EXTENSIONS for more details.

Sangoma Phone Desktop Softphone Can be Opened from the User Web Suite

In the user web suite, a Desktop Softphone launch button sits right next to the Switchboard launch button. This lets the user open the app without having to log into it.

This also means that an admin user can use the admin web suite to log in as the phone user, then launch the desktop app as that user. In that scenario, the other user will be logged out of the app, so be careful to do during off-hours.

Please ensure you are using the most recent version of the Sangoma Phone desktop softphone app.

Sangoma Desk Phones

The PM200 is now supported for the third page. If a Switchvox user's phone settings indicate that paging is Enabled, then all 3 pages of the PM200 will be used.

Updates to Switchvox no longer include a fixed set of phone firmware. Instead, Sangoma may indicate a specific set of firmware (based on your version of Switchvox and the most recent version of supported firmware) to be downloaded and applied during the Switchvox update. See What Sangoma P-Series Phone Firmware Ships with Switchvox?

Issues Resolved

  • Improved security practices to comply with accepted security standards.

  • A 'Call Hangup' Event Trigger is now correctly sent at the very end of a call where the call was routed to a queue, answered, and transferred.

  • Voicemail messages are now respecting the 'max length' and 'max silence' admin settings, where previously a race condition would periodically allow messages that did not meet those requirements.

  • Time zones in Mexico are corrected for Daylight Savings Time.

  • Switchvox now correctly returns an error if a CA certificate is entered that consists of multiple certificates in a chain.

  • For Sangoma desk phones (P-series and D-series), "blind transfer rapid dial" mode now correctly blind transfers a call to an external phone number on a rapid dial button.

  • Sangoma Chat mobile app no longer receives push notifications after the extension's password has been reset.

  • Added voicemail-storage enhancements.
