Licensing (SBC Mode)

The 2020 SBC can have Gateway functionality, Session Border Controller Functionality, or both. Using the 2020 SBC specifically as a Session Border Controller requires a license to open various functions such as SBC Sessions, VoIP Ports, and select Codecs. The licenses are distributed by email when the product is purchased. Each license will unlock a different function and the licenses are sold in multiple increments to address each customer needs. After receiving the license, transfer the license using SFTP to the SD card or FTP server (whichever the system software file is loaded from). Click on the Physical Node BN 2020 object. In the object page, click on the Download New License button. The license will automatically download to the 2020 SBC node.

The license file needs to be loaded into the directory that the system software binary file is loaded. If using SD Card, load license file onto the SD Card if loading through DHCP/FTP server, the license must be loaded in the directory that the system software file is loaded.

File Format

The license file supplied contains a unique number which is derived from the serial number of the I/O board located on a white sticker near the power supplies on the rear of the 2020 SBC and a 12 bit unique number embedded in the hardware. The format of the file includes an eight digit serial number (NNNNNNNN) followed by a timestamp (YYYYMMDDhhmmss). If the license is renamed or altered, it will become unusable. Refer to the example below.

License Naming Convention - NNNNNNNN_YYYYMMDDhhmmss.cfg

Downloading the license

When downloading a license file to the 2020 SBC, the download utility looks for a file whose name includes the serial number of the 2020 SBC. Therefore when downloading a new license file, the old license should either be removed or modified to not contain the serial number, so when the download utility looks for the serial number it won't find the old license. For example, if the old license file was 10311234_20180101130221.cfg then the old license should either be removed from the directory or renamed to something like xx311234_20180101130221.cfg

  1. On the SD Card or ftp server, remove or rename any existing licenses (Refer to paragraph above). Using an SFTP application, transfer the updated license file to either the SD card or the ftp server. Refer to the SFTP Server  topic for information on transferring.

  2. Create the License Info object by right clicking on the Physical Node object and selecting New Licensing Info. Within the License Info page, make note of the current licensing since this will be updated after the license download. Refer to the License Info topic for more information on this object.

  3. Within the Web GUI, click on the Physical Node BN2020 object in the object tree.

  4. Click on the Download New License button at the bottom of the License Info object pane. The license loaded will be sent to the 2020 SBC.

  5. After license is sent, refresh the Web GUI page. Click on the License Info object and verify the new license has been loaded.

The license is downloaded based on the serial number and a unique number embedded in the hardware. If a license other than the license intended for this node is sent, the license will not download. The license being sent has to be specifically created for this nodes serial number and unique number. If license is renamed or in any way altered, it will become unusable.

Evaluation License

Evaluation licenses expire after a specified number of days. The License Expiration field within the License Info pane indicates the date and time the evaluation license expires. Licenses that are not designated as evaluation licenses will display Does Not Expire. Seventy-two hours before an evaluation license is set to expire, an EventView alarm displays the number of hours remaining on the evaluation license.

License Validation Failure

The following icon below is displayed in front of the BN2020 object if the license does not validate with the node it was sent to.

A license validation has failed. Verify the serial number for license is serial number of 2020 SBC. Refer to the License Info topic.

Licensed Components

Below is a list of licenses that can be created. Information on each is provided in the table below.

If licensing remote CIC's, each remote node must have an SS7_ISUP port license that equals the number of CIC's being configured on that remote node.

If configuring SS7 Redundancy, both the Active node and its Peer/Redundant node must have an SS7 Base license.

License

Description

License Expiration Info(Optional)

Licenses generated for the 2020 SBC do not expire unless the license is specifically generated as an evaluation license. If the license is an evaluation license then the Date and Time the license expires is displayed in the License Expiration field of the License Info pane. If the license loaded is NOT an evaluation license then the License Expiration field will display Does Not Expire.

Licenses do not expire unless the license is configured as an evaluation license

SECURITY_ID

The security ID is a code embedded in the ROM of the 2020 SBC node. Each license generated must have the code embedded in the license file for the system to work.

VOIP_PORT

There are a total of 4500 VoIP Ports.   Note: The 2020 SBC has a maximum port density of 4500 VoIP ports. This is true for all codecs except the AMR-NB and AMR-WB codecs. The maximum port density when using AMR-NB and AMR-WB are restricted to 2800 and 1400 ports respectively.

AMR_CODEC (SBC)_2

The maximum number of VoIP ports using the AMR codec is restricted to 2800 ports.

AMR_CODEC_WB (Wide Band)

The maximum number of VoIP ports using the AMR-WB codec (G.722.2) is restricted to 1400 ports. RFC 3267

VIDEO_TRANSCODING

The maximum number of Video Transcoding licenses is 864. It takes 2 video transcoding licenses to achieve an end to end video call with transcoding functionality.

To make a video call without changing codecs (transcoding), no transcoding licenses are required. Video calls do not need a license unless transcoding is to be utilized.

DSP_RESOURCE_POINT

All 2020 SBC's comes fully licensed with 6144 DSP Resource Points.

SECURE_COMMUNICATIONS

The secure communication license adds the licensing needed to configure TLS. Once TLS is configured, SRTP can then be configured.

SYSTEM_SOFTWARE

System Software License is needed on all 2020 SBC nodes and is specific to the software build.

AUDIO_TRANSCODING

The maximum number of audio Transcoding licenses is dependent on codec in use. It takes 2 audio transcoding licenses to achieve an end to end audio call with transcoding functionality.

To make an audio call without changing codecs (transcoding), no transcoding licenses are required. Audio calls do not need a license unless transcoding is to be utilized.

SBC_SESSIONS

Maximum number is 2250 SBC Sessions. This will require 4500 VoIP ports. One SBC Session is equivalent to two VoIP ports. One port for incoming and one port for outgoing.

One Session license per pair of VoIP Channels is needed

License Increments

The table below displays the increments in which licenses are generated. The 2020 SBC can have Gateway functionality, Session Border Controller Functionality, or both. The functionality is determined through licensing. The table below displays the increments in which the 2020 SBC with SBC Functionality (IP Session to IP Session) are generated. Please contact Sangoma Sales to determine which functionality would meet your needs.
