Overview

This article is intended to provide guidance on how to work within channels and keep conversations organized and therefore keep topics within a channel focused.

Terminology:

• Topic - When a post is made in a channel it usually is intended to cover a specific topic, like a product announcement, or a change in procedures, or a question about something.

• Post - For this article this mean a new message posted/created in a channel.

• Reply - For this article this reply means replying to an existing post in a channel.

• Thread - A thread is created when a person replies to a post. Once a thread is create additional people can respond in the thread insuring that the all comments are with in the realm of the topic.

What is the issue

A channel may contain several different topics (I.e.. New product announce, company policy changes, etc..), therefore creating a new post in response to a topic may get confusing or lost if a new post with a different topic was created .

Example:

• Post in Channel: We are proud to introduce the new version of TeamHub. Visit the release notes for more information.

• Post in Channel: Please note we have made significant changes to our Sangoma website. Please let us know your thoughts.

• Post in Channel: I like the changes.

How does anyone know if the person likes the changes to TeamHub or the new Website.

What is the solution

It is best to reply to the existing post versus creating new post as a reply to the existing post. This will insure that the reply is focused on the intended topic.

Example:

• Post in Channel: We are proud to introduce the new version of TeamHub. Visit the release notes for more information.

  • Reply/Thread: I like the changes.

• Post in Channel: Please note we have made significant changes to our Sangoma website. Please let us know your thoughts.

Using the reply method creates a thread and therefore insure that the message directed at the correct post. Now other people can open the thread and and contribute to the topic conversation.
