IMG 1010 - Span Status Queries

Overview:

Feature 1144 'Span Queries and Update Status on Spans' will allow the user the ability to query the status of each individual span. From ClientView, the user will be able to select a specific span and then query information such as a spans status, number of framing errors, number of slips, and a number of other relevant information that is used when troubleshooting a span issue.

Prerequisites:

To be able to query the status of each of the spans, they must first get created. See the following topics which will explain how to create bearer and signaling spans.

IMG 1010 - Configuring T1 or E1 Bearer Profile - 10.5.x

IMG 1010 - Configuring T1 or E1 Bearer Spans - 10.5.x

IMG 1010 - Configuring T1 or E1 Signaling Spans - 10.5.x

Procedure:

  • Once the T1 or E1 span is created then they can be queried. Select each individual span as shown below and select Query Span Status. Select the Bearer or Signaling Span object in ClientView.

  • Select the 'Object Table' tab. This will display each of the spans along with some status information.

  • Select one of the spans and right click on it. Select Query Span Status. If you would like to query multiple spans, select each span while holding down the <Ctrl> key.

  • A box like the following will appear with span status information.

The Span Status feature is an indication of errors that have occurred in a snapshot of time. Once the information is displayed (For Ex: Span Status screen opened), the error counters are cleared and set back to zero. The number of errors printed in the span status screen may not reflect the actual number of errors that have occurred in a given amount of time. Other span related system events occurring between Update Status requests may clear the span data. To acquire an accurate indication of Frame Errors, Slips, and Loss of Frame Counts, the span status screen must not be active during a test interval. For example, to get an accurate number of slips etc within a time frame, do the following

  1. Open the Query Span Status screen as described above.

  2. Once Span Status screen is open, click away from it so the menu bar turns gray. (Span status is Not Active)

  3. Wait a predetermined amount of time.

  4. Click on the Update Status button. This will display any events that happened during the predetermined amount of time from step 3.

Span Status Descriptions:

Timestamp - Displays the Date and Time that the Span Status Query was performed.

Bipolar Violation Counter - Displays the number of bipolar violations detected since last request. The Bipolar Violation (BPV) indicates an error in the transmission of the signal whether it be AMI, or a modified version of AMI such as B8ZS, or Bit 7 zero suppression.

Frame Errors-  A framing error is generally the result of reading a string of symbols grouped in blocks starting at the wrong point. There may be no stop bit, start bit, incorrect number of bits, etc. The problem is usually noise on the line.

Frame Errors (T1) - If the span is T1, this field displays the number of frame bit errors.

Frame Errors (E1) - If the span is E1, this field displays frame alignment signal errors.

Slip Counters - The number of slips detected since last request. Slips are usually the result of a clocking problem. Synchronizing timing with the telco provider generally will solve the issue.

Remote Alarm Indication Counter (RAI) - Displays the number of times the Remote Alarm Indication has been detected since the last request. Receiving a remote alarm indication indicates the far end entity has a problem with the signal it is receiving from other far end equipment it is connected to.

Loss of Frame Counter - The Number of times a Loss of Frame has been detected since the last request. Loss of Frame is an indication that one or more network frames did not get through the networking device. If a Loss of Frame is encountered it is likely that your network device is not correctly configured or is over subscribed.

Buttons:

OK - The OK button will close the Span Status Window. Note: Hitting the "x" button in the top right corner will not close the window. The window must be closed by selecting the OK button.

Update Status- To update the Span Status window with latest information select Update Status button. The newest information will be appended to the information that is already displayed. Once the information was originally displayed the error counters are cleared and set back to zero. If Update Status button is then selected, the new information that is appended in the Span Status Display will be a new error count starting from the last time the error counter was cleared.
