IMG 1010 - Graceful Shutdown of IMG

Overview:

The IMG at certain times needs to be taken out of service for maintenance or to upgrade software. The Graceful Shutdown feature gives the IMG the ability to gracefully divert traffic away before performing these tasks. This feature gives the IMG the ability to take any or all configured channels within the system out of service (OOS) without disconnecting active calls. Connected Channels with active calls on them will not be taken out of service until the calls have been released. Once the channel has been torn down it is returned to the idle state then the channel is taken out of service. The Graceful OOS can be used in two ways.

  • Node Level- Will take all TDM and IP Channels gracefully out of service

  • Channel Level- By selecting a Range of TDM channels within a channel group you can gracefully bring individual channels or Channel Groups out of service.

Node Level:

When taking IMG gracefully out of service at the node level, all TDM and IP Channels will be taken Out Of Service as they become idle.

Procedure:

  • To implement the Graceful OOS procedure right click on the Physical Node Object in ClientView and select Graceful Out of Service or click on the Graceful Out of Service button when Physical IMG is selected:

  • A pop up window as shown below will appear displaying the Overall Progress of how many channels are active and how many have been torn down. When this gets to 100% all Channels will be Out Of Service:

Buttons:

OK- Hitting the OK button will close the Graceful OOS pop up. This option is available once the graceful OOS process is complete.

Cancel- Hitting the cancel button will close the Graceful out of Service pop up. You will not be able to track graceful OOS status. The channels will continue to go OOS as they become idle.

OOS- Hitting this button will force all the channels out of service whether the channel is active or not.

INS- Hitting this button will cancel the process and bring all channels back into service to the idle state, ready for call processing. The INS button can be selected at any time during the Graceful OOS process.

Once all channels are Out of Service, maintenance on the IMG can proceed. All channels will come back into service after a reboot.

Channel Level:

At the channel level the TDM channels are selected within each channel group. Graceful Shutdown of IP channels is accomplished by using the IP Traffic Management  feature and setting the Max Number of Simultaneous Sessions to zero.

Procedure:

  • The Graceful Shutdown can be accomplished on a single channel or range of channels. To take a single channel or range of channels OOS, highlight either the b-channels in ISDN, the cics in SS7, or the CAS Channels in CAS under each channel group. See screen capture below detailing each channel groups circuits

  • Once one of the following circuits are selected, the Object table will display all the circuits along with there service state. Highlight the spans that you would like to take OOS. Below is screen capture of ISDN b-channels being taken Gracefully out of service:

  • The selected channels will go OOS:

  • To bring channels back into service you can highlight the channels and then right click and select 'In Service'. This will bring the highlighted channels back into service.

  • To bring all channels on the Node back into service right click on IMG EMS pane and select Graceful Out Of Service as explained in the Node Level above. This will open the Graceful Out Of Service window. Once open select INS and all channels TDM and IP will be brought back into service. This is an easy way of bringing all channels back into service globally.
