Overview

The Grandstream HT814 is a four-port FXS and HT818 is an eight-port FXS Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) device packaged in a compact chassis. These devices can be used for the following purposes:

  • Fax machine on FXS port

  • Local or remote phone on FXS port

Overview of the Installation Process

The HT814 and HT818 are normally pre-configured for use with our StarCloud+ telephone system. In most cases, the installer can connect the HT814 or HT818 to the customer’s network along with the appropriate analog telephone connections.

If the provided configuration needs to be changed, it is possible to field-program the HT814 or HT818 using the instructions covered later in this guide.

Connecting the HT814 and HT818

The rear panel of the HT814 has a power connection, four RJ11 telephone connectors, and two RJ45 network connectors, as shown in the following picture:

The connectors are used as follows:

DC 12V

Power connector. Connect the provided AC power supply here.

Note: Does not operate on Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Connection for a laptop computer. Use this connection for field re-configuration.

Connection to the local network (if used as a local device) or to a WAN connection (if used as a remote device).

Connections for an FXS (station) device, such as an analog telephone or a fax machine.

The LAN port is only used to access the HT814 or HT818’s built-in configuration server from a connected laptop. This is necessary to perform the initial configuration. After the device is configured, the LAN cable can be disconnected.

Pre-Installation Configuration

Ensure that the HT814 or HT818 device is added to the customer system and correctly provisioned using the portal. ATA devices are added via the Multi-Extension Devices page in the portal. Analog phone and fax Extensions are configured via the Extensions page in the portal. For more information, refer to the ATAs Portal Configuration Guide.

The HT814 and HT818 can be configured for either local (On-Net) or remote (off-net) use. If you are re-deploying an HT814 or HT818 that was already configured, follow the instructions in the Factory Reset section below. Then, configure the device for either local or remote operation. A device configured for local operation does not work as a remote device and vice-versa, so it is important to apply the correct configuration to the HT814 or HT818.

If you are unsure about the current configuration, perform the factory reset and then configure the device.

Factory Reset

To factory reset the HT814 or HT818 ATA device:

  1. Unplug the cable from the WAN or LAN port.

  2. Locate the small hole on the back panel of the unit next to the power connector, to the left for HT814 and to the right for HT818.

  3. Insert a straightened paper clip or other thin tool into the hole, and press for about seven seconds. Once removed, the device resets to the factory settings.

Configure as a Local Device

To configure the HT814 or HT818 ATA device as a local device:

  1. Connect an ethernet cable from a laptop computer to the LAN port on the HT814 or HT818 device.

Important: The computer must be configured to obtain an IP address automatically using DHCP.

  1. Connect an ethernet cable to the local network using the WAN port.

  2. Access a Web browser and direct the browser to http://192.168.2.1. The HT814 or HT818 login screen displays.

  3. For the user name and password, enter admin (all lower case) in both fields. The main configuration menu displays.

  4. Use the HT814 or HT818 configuration menu to configure the WAN port to use VLAN 41.

  5. Select Advanced Settings. Scroll down to Firmware Upgrade & Provisioning: Upgrade VIA, select HTTP.

  6. For the configuration server address, enter 10.41.22.99.

  7. Once connected to switch on VLAN 41, the HT814 or HT818 obtains the necessary configuration data. This will allow device registration. The HT814 or HT818 is now ready to use.

Once registered, the HT814 or HT818 can make and receive inbound and outbound calls.

Configure as a Remote Device

The HT814 and HT818 can operate as a remote device, but it requires installation-specific configuration information to operate. For assistance, contact Star2Star Technical Support.

Blue Light Indicates

Connected to power.

Phone is connected and off-hook.

Connected to a WAN connection.

Connected to a LAN connection.
