This article describes the new features, enhancements, and bug fixes in each version of Sangoma Phone, Sangoma's desktop softphone app for Windows or macOS.

Issues Resolved

New Features

  • URL Popup button is now available in the active call card. Previously, a URL only popped on the incoming call, there was no other way to open it.

  • Login screen changes:

    • Cancel button. If you enter the wrong login information, now you can Cancel and enter new information.

    • Remember Extension/Username button. If this box is checked, the login screen remembers hostname and extension/username -- password is the only thing that must be filled out.

  • Settings include Mic and Speaker tests.

  • If the app is attached to Switchvox: there is a new audio alert when someone else is getting an incoming call that you could pick up. In Settings, Audio Alert for Call Pickup. This requires that Call Activity is ON in Settings, and that the Switchvox administrator has given you permission to pick up at least one other person’s calls.

  • The Talk, Chat, and Queue tabs are on the left side of the app, instead of the top. This offers a little more desktop real estate, because it can be collapsed (you can’t collapse the top bar).

Issues Resolved

  • The microphone can now be changed in the middle of a call.

  • If the app is attached to Switchvox:

    • Call activity: Contacts are now shown as on the phone as soon as they dial out, where previously they were not shown on a call until the call connected.

    • Queues

      • Log in/out and pause/unpause where the user is part of multiple queues now happens simultaneously, as opposed to one queue at a time. Although that happened quickly, it wasn’t quickly enough, and there was a possibility for a queue call to be answered out of order.

      • Pause action is now correctly available for a user who is a permanent member of a queue (rather than a queue where the user logs in or out). This is available in the Queues tab, and the Talk tab on the My Queues screen.

      • Clicking on another queue member’s login state no longer logs you into the queue.

Change When Attached to Switchvox

  • The legacy Sangoma Meet integration can be turned on or off in Settings, and it is OFF by default. Switchvox's integration with Sangoma Meet is changing to support logging directly into Sangoma Meet with Switchvox credentials, but this legacy integration can still be used if turned ON in Settings.

New features When Attached to Switchvox 7.9.3

  • If the Switchvox admin has given the app-user the appropriate permissions to interact with their coworkers (Setup > Permissions), these new features are available:

    • Intercom a contact. The intercom action will be available for the contact.

    • Call Activity. This is OFF by default, but can be turned on in the app Settings. If this is ON, and the permissions are in place, the Call Activity screen lets the app-user see other people's calls. The app-user can also:

      • Monitor a call, whisper into a call, or barge into a call.

      • Pick up an incoming-ringing call for their contacts.

    • Queue Member Activity: if a member is on a non-queue call, that member is shown with a green 'busy' bar.

3.8.0 Released on 2022-11-28

New features - When Attached to Switchvox 7.9.3

  • The Talk tab now includes a My Queues feature for an app user who is a member of at least one queue with My Status permission. My Queues lets the user

    • See their status on each of their queues.

    • See their Taken and Missed numbers on each of their queues.

    • Log in/out/pause on each of their queues separately (unless they are a permanent member of the queue).

    • Log in/out/pause of all of their queues at the same time. If a pause reason is included, that is used across all of their queues. If the user is a permanent member of any of their queues, this doesn't affect those queues -- permanent members always get queue calls.

  • The Queues tab now includes notifications and audio alerts when the queue threshold(s) are reached.

  • The Queues tab Queue Member Activity now includes

    • Actions to Monitor a call, whisper into the call, or barge into the call. This requires that the Switchvox admin used Setup>Permissions in the admin web suite to give the app user permission to Monitor calls for the member of the queue who is on the call.

    • Calls taken by non-members using the Answer Now call-control action. Although that is not strictly a "Member Activity" it is a queue call and is therefore included here. These calls do not display a login-state or stats (because the person who answered the call is not a member).

Changes: External Contacts that are created or modified now have a star in that screen, rather than a check box, to indicate if the contact is a Favorite or not. That is consistent with how Favorites are indicated in the Contacts/Favorites list.

  • Make Calls With option is now correctly displaying the phone that is currently in use for placing a call.

  • External Contact Delete option is moved to the External Contact modify screen.

  • External Contacts are now associated with a caller who is parked, and answered from the parking lot, to display as the contact.

3.7.0 Released on 2022-10-19

New features

  • The Call Pop Up feature now offers a setting to open a browser window for a Ringing Call, or an Answered Call. That can force the browser pop up to happen only when the member actually answers the call.

  • Visual changes bring the app up-to-date with Sangoma branding.

New features - When Attached to Switchvox 7.9.3

  • The Queues tab now displays Calls Waiting and Member Activity.

    • Alert thresholds can be set to visually indicate when a queue has too many calls waiting, or the longest wait time is too long.

    • The Calls Waiting tab offers the same call-actions that are available in the Switchboard: Move to Top, Assign a member, or Answer Now. This requires the app user to have Call Control permission on the queue.

    • The Members tab displays all the queue members, their status in the queue, and their active queue call(s).

      • Filter the list of members by Logged in, Logged Out, or Paused. Permanent members are included when All or Logged In is selected.

      • Mouse over the member to see their Taken and Missed call stats for the day.

Issues Resolved

  • Registering as the tel: protocol handler no longer creates multiple calls, which happened in unlikely circumstances.

  • The Call Pop Up no longer opens multiple browser windows when the app-user is part of a ring-all call rule.

  • Correction to circumstances where the app could cause a high load the on the user's computer.

  • The app no longer fails to log in when the hostname has a space before the hostname, after it, or before and after it.

3.6.0 Released on 2022-09-07

Available in the app when attached to Switchvox 7.9.2.1: Manage External Contacts from the app. 

  • Create an External Contact from a Call Log entry, Voicemail message, or SMS message, or enter it manually.

  • Add a number to an existing External Contact.

  • Modify and delete existing External Contacts.

  • Note: If an External Contact was created by a Switchvox administrator, it cannot be modified or deleted.

Issues Resolved

  • Occasionally, under particular circumstances, the app would open as a white screen. This has been corrected.

  • The Call Pop Up feature no longer opens multiple browser windows if 2 or more of the user's phones are set to ring on an incoming call.

  • For apps attached to Switchvox, the Log Out button is removed for permanent members of a queue. (The purpose of a permanent member is that they are always available for queue calls.)

  • For apps attached to FreePBX, there's a correction for a rare circumstance where a call is not successfully parked.

Available in the app when attached to Switchvox 7.9.3:

  • When a call is being automatically recorded by Swiitchvox, and the Switchvox administrator has allowed the recording to be paused, there is a Pause Recording button on the call. Use this button to cause silence in the automated recording, for as long as the recording is paused. Click the button again to resume recording as normal. This is useful if, for example, you are taking a credit card number during the conversation.

Issues resolved:

  • The app's Keypad correctly allows a long-press on the 0 (zero) key to dial +, and you can dial + on the computer keyboard to enter it in the app's Keypad.

  • Number formatting is corrected in an SMS chat.

3.4.0 Released on 2022-07-11

Available in the app when attached to Switchvox 7.9.2.1:

  • A new Queues tab offers queue stats and member status, for all queues where the app user has Detailed View (or Call Control) permission. 

    • If the app user is a login member of a queue, they can log in, log out, and pause their own status in that queue.

    • If the app user has Call Control permission on a queue, they can log any member out of that queue. (Just like the Switchboard, they cannot log the member in, or pause the member.)

Issues resolved:

  • Style and edit options are disabled for text messaging to/from external phone numbers (SMS).

  • The app now correctly plays a beep and goes off hook to answer an intercom. (For Switchvox users: When attached to Switchvox, and a Switchvox coworker has permission to intercom the app user, an Alert-Info header of Direct-Intercom is sent to the app and is now correctly answered.)

3.3.2 Released on 2022-06-20

New features and changes:

  • The Jabra SPEAK 510+ UC speakerphone is now supported for answer, end, and mute.

  • Issues Resolved:

    • The floating calls panel is now shown when the app is displaying Settings, from both the Talk and the Chat tab.

    • Phone-number formatting with () and - is restricted to just a few specific criteria, so that international numbers aren't incorrectly formatted in the US style.

Available in the app when attached to Switchvox version 7.9.1 :

  • Change Password tool in Settings. This changes your password everywhere, including this app, the Switchvox Chat for Mobile app, the web suite, etc. If the admin has set the app's extension to Force change of password on next login, the app presents the Change Password screen the next time the user logs in (the user can't use the app until they change their password).

  • The Favorites sort order is now retained across login sessions.

Available in the app when attached to Switchvox version 7.9.2

Enable Call Pop Up Setting. You can enter a URL that will open in your default browser on each external-incoming call. For each call, data about that caller can be inserted into the URL: incoming caller ID Name and Number, and incoming DID (the phone number dialed by the incoming caller).

3.3.1 Released on 2022-06-03

  • This change is specific to the app when attached to Switchvox version 7.9, which offers the new feature to manage your Favorite Contacts. The app no longer fails when the extension's Favorite Contacts include a Status Indicator entry. Status Indicator entries are not used by the desktop softphone app, and in this scenario the app was not correctly ignoring them.

3.3.0 Released on 2022-06-01

Available within the app when attached to Switchvox version 7.9, and for Chat/SMS:

  • Favorite Contacts can be managed within the app:

    • Search for a contact to add it to your own custom Favorites list.

    • View your own list, or a list created by a Switchvox administrator.

    • Remove a Favorite from your own list. (You can always make it a Favorite again.)

    • Sort the list you're viewing by first or last name, or by the custom sort order of that list. (You cannot change the custom sort order of a list.)

  • Chat now handles a hyperlink correctly when it is pasted into a message.

  • Chat now automatically scrolls to the bottom of a message where appropriate.

3.2.1 Released on 2022-05-05

  • Searching for a contact now finds matches for partial names and numbers. For example, a search string 51 finds extension 1051, and sen finds Nelsen.

  • Voicemail now correctly displays date and time in the time zone defined on the computer (the Call Log functions this way also).

  • The expand button now fully expands the right pane even if the app has been sized manually.

  • Calls on hold are now colored differently, to make it more obvious when a call is on hold or not.

  • Specific to Switchvox:

    • The phone-status of Favorite contacts is corrected where, under particular circumstances, it previously failed to show a contact on a call.

    • Additional numbers are now correctly available for a Favorite contact.

    • Clicking on a chat notification now brings the Chat tab and that particular chat into focus.

    • On macOS, chat interaction no longer forces the app onto the computer's main display.

    • A parked call that came directly into the parking lot no longer causes the app to crash when the user goes to the Parked Calls screen.

3.2.0 Released on 2022-04-20

  • Specific to Switchvox:

    • There are now 2 main Tabs: Talk and Chat. All of the text-messaging activity is moved to the Chat tab. In the Talk tab you can still click a Contact's Chat icon - that moves you to the Chat tab so that you can chat with them. 

    • The Conference app now displays in the right-hand pane, to allow more space for that, and to let you move around the app more easily.

    • The floating calls pane stays open when you have the app in the foreground on the Chat tab. This offers easy access to your calls while you're chatting.

    • The setting for ordering the Chat list is now maintained even after you log out.

  • Settings and Logout are now available from the Status dropdown.

  • Contacts now display in a right-hand pane, to allow more space for them.

  • The call area is modified to be more visually helpful, and the mute/unmute toggle now indicates when your audio is active.

3.1.2 Released on 2022-02-18

  • The app now displays on the main screen in the event that additional monitors/displays are no longer available.

  • Favorites are now updated for call-state and Status without moving to another tab and back to Favorites.

  • Searching for a contact when that contact is changing in the PBX no longer results in a black screen.

  • Audio settings:

    • Voicemail is now correctly played in the device chosen as Speaker.

    • An error is corrected where sometimes settings were not respected for a bluetooth headset. 

  • Specific to Switchvox:

    • The Parked Calls tab now correctly displays the call information for a parked outgoing-external call. 

    • When a call is moved to a Meet video conference, the Join Sangoma Meet call-card is now correctly removed once everyone has left the conference, and within the Meeting you can succcessfully change your screen background.

3.1.1 Released on 2022-01-31

  • App is renamed to “Sangoma Phone” from Switchvox Phone (for more information, see Switchvox Phone Becomes Sangoma Phone). For Windows users, this is a seamless transition. For some macOS versions, the app will not restart and you will need to find and open the Sangoma Phone app in your Applications. You may also need to correct your shortcut to the app. 

  • The app can be set as the calling app for tel: links on web pages (in the app's Settings). 

  • Intercom calls no longer interrupt an active call by putting it on hold and ‘answering’ the intercom call.

  • With Immediate Blind Transfer ON, you can now immediately blind transfer your call by dialing a number in the Keypad and completing the transfer. Previously this didn't work from the Keypad.

  • Now supports Sangoma's HC100 and HC120 headsets for volume, answer, end, and mute.

  • Audio settings are now more strongly adhered to even when the system defaults do not match the app's settings.

  • Audio volume settings now correctly controls the volume of ring-back (the ringing you hear when you place a call and it hasn't yet been answered).

  • On Windows, the notifications center icon and the Start menu icon look alike.

  • In the Parked Calls tab, the parking lot extension is no longer cut off when the caller ID is too long.

  • In the Parked Calls tab, punctuation is now displayed correctly.

  • SMS notifications are now matched with an existing External Contact. 

  • In Contacts, search now correctly finds contacts with special characters in their name.

  • Chat with a peered contact: file strings are no longer displayed with an image attachment from a peered contact.

  • Edit a Chat Room: it no longer appears that you can toggle a Room to/from public or private. Once you create a Room as public or private, you cannot change that.

  • Logging out via the Settings page is now correctly reflected in the Menu items.

3.1.0 Released on 2021-12-07

New Features

  • Notifications for incoming calls are now offered as a Floating Calls Pane. The pane is always available on your desktop when you have a call and the app is in the background. You can answer or ignore an incoming call, and once you answer or place a call you can put it on hold, or end it.

  • The Settings screen is adjusted so that any setting that is a YES/NO toggle is now presented and toggled in the same way.

  • For image attachments within text messaging, you can drag and drop from the desktop. (This requires Switchvox 7.8.2; chat and SMS may not be available for PBXact/FreePBX.)

  • New Features for Attachment to Switchvox 7.8.3 :

    • On-Premise Switchvox customers: If the app is assigned to the user as a phone, then the user can set their Emergency Location. (If the app is not being used as a phone, or Make Calls With is a phone other than the app, these settings are not shown. The Location settings will be determined by the extension used to place an emergency call.)

    • Switchvox Cloud and On-Premise customers: A Switchvox administrator can turn off Chat/SMS (Setup > Manage > Settings) for their Switchvox, so that the apps do not include Chat/SMS. (In this scenario, Chat/SMS is also removed in the mobile apps version 2.2.0 or later.)

Bug Fixes

  • The app's icon in the Windows notifications center is now correctly badged when there are unseen text messages. 

  • Chat entries are no longer incorrectly sent to the keypad under a specific scenario.

  • Image-file attachments where the filename has a space are now correctly sent to the external (SMS) recipient.

  • An Immediate Blind Transfer setting gives you one-click immediate blind transfer of your active call. In this mode, you don't have to click Transfer in the call and then click again to complete the transfer. And, this mode also works to immediate-transfer your active call to a contact's voicemail.

Bug Fixes

  • The Missed Calls alerts (a badge on the Call Log) are now cleared in the desktop app when you view your Call Log in the Switchvox Chat mobile app.

  • Links in a chat message now change the cursor style to a pointer when hovered, and open the url when clicked.
