IMG 1010 - DS3 Diagnostics

DS3 Diagnostics (IMG1010 only)

Loopback Testing

To test Layer 1 signal integrity, you can enable local or remote loopback on a DS3 or DS1.

When you place a span in loopback mode the Span Status will indicate Out Of Service in the Object Table Tab in ClientView. Following the test you must manually put the span back in service by selecting the Span/Offset from the Object Table Tab. Once selected, right-click and select In Service from drop down menu.

DS3:

  • To put all DS1's into either local or remote loopback set the All DS1's Loopback mode to either local or remote loopback in the Bearer - DS3 ID:0 Pane.

  • To allow loop-back to be configured from the far-end, enable the DS3 and DS1 FEAC Responses option in the Bearer - ID:0 pane.

  • To put individual DS1's into either local or remote loopback set each individual span in the Bearer Spans pane to either local or remote loopback.

BERT

Use Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT) to test the quality of DS3 links and to troubleshoot problems. You send out a known bit pattern and verify the received bits against the sent pattern. A high bit error rate indicates noise on the circuit. The IMG can be configured to run Bit Error Rate Tests (BERT) on a DS3 or on individual DS1s in a DS3, which includes:

  • Generate a test pattern to be verified by a piece of external test equipment or another IMG

  • Monitor a test pattern when configuring both the transmit and receive.

  • Insert bit errors

Starting and Stopping a BERT Test

  • Right-click on the desired DS3 entry and select New BERT Test. The BERT pane appears.

    • Select options as required in the fields. See the IMG 1010 - BERT Test pane reference for more information.

DS1’s do not need to be configured when testing the entire DS3 circuit.

When finished configuring the options, commit the configuration. Testing starts as soon as the configuration has been committed. While in test mode, the span status LED for the DS3 or DS1s will flash orange.

Results:

The results of the test are shown in the Status fields of the IMG 1010 - BERT Test pane. The following information is reported:

Monitor Status- This is the status of the object that is being monitored, since this is a BIT map these fields could be concatenated together.

Bits Received- This is the amount of Bits received in Megabits.

Errors Received- This is the amount of bit errors received.

Elapsed Time - Time it took for test to complete.

Error Mode - Displays whether error mode has been enabled or disabled in the BERT test
