IMG 1010 - Hardware Alarm Module

 

Overview:

The hardware alarm module supports the IMG 1010 platform by configuring the fans and temperature sensors for optimal cooling and temperature control. The alarm module monitors the fans and temperature sensors and reports different alarm conditions in EventView. There are four fans located on the front panel. The fans are variable speed and work in conjunction with the six temperature sensors on the main board. Software controls the fan speed by monitoring the temperature sensors. The hardware alarm module supports three levels of alarm reporting:(Major/Minor/Critical) Alarms are displayed in EventView when an event such as the temperature of one of the sensors reaches a level that triggers an alarm to be sent to EventView. The hardware alarm module monitors the following parameters:

  • Fan status in revolutions per minute (RPM) (IMG 1010 only)

  • Temperature sensor status in degrees Celsius (°C)

Fan Alarms (IMG 1010 Only):

  • Minor Alarm- A minor alarm is sent to EventView when one or more of the fans cross the normal fan speed threshold. See fan speed specifications in table above. When fans return to normal fan speed, an alarm cleared message is sent.

  • Major Alarm- A major alarm is sent to EventView when one or more of the fans cross the minor alarm fan speed threshold and enter the major alarm fan speed threshold. See specifications in Table 1 above. If a Major alarm happens to one or more of the fans, the IMG 1010 will send a signal to fans to spin at full speed. A major alarm typically means one or more of the fans has failed.

  • Alarm Cleared- An alarm cleared message is sent to EventView when the IMG 1010 fan speed crosses the minor alarm fan speed threshold, and returns to the point where fans are running at normal speed.

Temperature Sensor Alarms:

There are six temperature sensors in the IMG 1010. The alarms below are sent when one or more of them gets above a specific threshold explained below.

  • Minor Alarm- A Minor Temperature Alarm is sent to EventView when one or more temperature sensors cross the Normal Temperature Range threshold and enters the Minor Temperature Alarm Range. See table above. A Minor Temperature alarm cleared message is sent to EventView when temperature falls back to 55°C.

  • Major Alarm- A Major Temperature Alarm is sent to EventView when one or more temperature sensors output a temperature above 70°C. See Table 2 above. First a Major Temperature Alarm cleared message is sent and then a Minor Temperature Alarm is sent to EventView when temperature falls back to 65°C.

  • Critical Alarm- A Critical Temperature Alarm is sent to EventView when one or more temperature sensors output a temperature above 80°C. See Table 2 above. First a Critical Temperature Alarm cleared message is sent and then a Major Temperature Alarm message is sent to EventView when temperature falls back to 75°C.

  • Normal Alarm- A Normal Alarm is generated when the temperature falls to within Normal Temperature Range after being in the Minor Alarm Temperature range.

Temperature Sensor Alarms:

The consequential actions for the above alarm conditions are as follows:

  • Major Temperature Alarm = Fans increase speed to full on.

  • Critical Temperature Alarm = System resets.

Additional Information:

Once one temperature sensor sends an alarm each subsequent temperature sensor will not send an alarm for going over the threshold values.
