New Changes To The Google Maps App In Switchboard

There is an updated API from Google for this app. There are some changes to the way the app works:

  1. When the Switchboard widget first loads, the new API now shows a map of the US with the message "Your google maps panel will refresh on the next incoming call". Previous API shows a blank, gray widget.

  2. The new API no longer displays a red pin (which was wildly inaccurate, since the pinned location can be far away from the actual physical location of the caller). The old API drops a pin.

  3. The new API also provides both a Satellite View button and a View Larger Map button in the widget. The old API only includes a Zoom + and - buttons.

  4. The display of the Call Lists remains the same: It shows a list of callers since the widget is first loaded. Clicking the Hide button will hide the list, and clicking on any of the caller entries will cause the widget to load the map of the location.

Details of features:

  • Zoom level: Changes require a Switchboard reload to take effect. Manual zoom and satellite view both work, but it resets when a new call comes in.

  • Invalid Number that cannot be matched results in the following error message (same as before): "Could not match your area code (563) and prefix (812) to a zip code".

  • Widget will not attempt to match any number fewer than 10 digits.

  • Some international numbers are matched and displayed properly. Those that follow US number scheme, such as Canada. Other International formats do not work.

  • Caller ID Name that has been appended does not alter matching result.
