(MWI) Message Waiting Indicator
Â
This document will help you understand how to properly configure MWI (Message Waiting Indicator)Â in vega 50/Vega 5000/Vega3000.
Before doing anything please make sure you are using the lastst firmware version on your Vega 50 or 5000. This has been tested with Firmware release R8.8S042 on Vega 5000 and R8.8S039 in Vega 50.
To properly configure MWI will need 3 thing to be properly configured:
1) PBX must have enable MWI signaling in order to be able to send the SIP NOTIFY Messages associated to enable or disable the notification.
2) We need to configure tone notification (stutter tone) if you want to notify the caller with a audible signal tone when trying to dialout a new call and let him know there is a Message Waiting.
3) We need to configure FXS attributes to be able to light up the Neon light in the Phone to make visible that there is a Message Wating.
Â
IPPBX MWI Enable
How to enable MWI signaling on your PBX will depend on the specific PBX you are using, please refer to you IPPBX documentation. To confirm if your IPPBX is sending the appropriate SIP INFO mesages, you can capture a sip trace and when someone leaves a meesage in an extension Voicemail, a message similar to this should be shown:

Audible Message.
Vega 50 and Vega 5000 default Tones are always setup to play Audible MWI, you can verify that in the Tones setup section in Expert GUI:
As you can see there is a definition associated to the Country Pofile you selected in the Quick Config. In this case we are using Mexico and for MWI there is a sequence selected by default.
A sequence is a list of consecutive tone definition, played one after the other for certain miliseconds. You can see and modify the sequece here:
If you click Modify:
In this case, Mexico_stutter_dial_sequence will play 3 tone definitions:
First Mexico_sutter_dialtone for 2 seconds, then plain Mexico_dialtone for 60 seconds and then Mexico_offhook_warning forever ("0" means continuous)
Each tone definition can be verified or modified here:
As you can see, each tone definition has up to four frequencies/Amplitud combinations, one play time and one off time in miliseconds and the last element is the one where yo can associate to the specific use (in this case, it says "dialtone".
One important note here and what makes very unique our Vega gateways, beside the flexibility to accomodate MWI in any way you want, is the fact that other vendors do not support dialing over when the Stutter dialtone in playing. That is why we can associate Stutter dial tone as another way of providing dialtone to the user.
Finally you need to setup the hardware associated parameter for the FXS ports:
The 2 important parameters here are:
Visual Message-Waiting Indicator
Loop Current Break
So,Â
Visual Message-Waiting Indication has 4 options:
1 - Disable: this way you disable visual MWI, but stil can have audible indicator as explained previously
2 - Tone:This option will have the FXS port to send inband signaling using fsk if the hone supports that. Usially phones that light up using external power supply rather than voltage on the line, of have any other indication such as a message in an LCD display.
3 - Neon: In this case the Vega will send the voltage to lightup the indicator
4 - Both: Will combine Tone + Neon
Current Loop Break must be enabled
IMPORTANT: Tone Option has nothing to do with the Stutter Tone Dial Tone. What this tone means is that Vega will send FSK tone signaling to the Phone to light up the visual indicator.
As a conclusion, having the ability to implement MWI will be a key component of any Vega 50/5000 deployment is the Hospitality industry as well as many others.
We have tested interop with the most comong analog handsets in the Hospitality industry including Teledex and Bittel, and scenarios with 2 or 3 handsets sharing the same line.
Hope this is useful.
