Troubleshooting

If you see the same message on the LCD display for more than 5 minutes (e.g. Contacting DHCP Server), the phone may be having trouble registering with the Fonality.

Please take the following steps:

  1. Disconnect the phone from power

  2. Double-check the Ethernet cable - the majority of network problems are the result of a cable connected to the wrong port on your router.  Make sure you did not accidentally connect the cable to a WAN port or to a port that is deactivated.

You can test the functionality of a port on your router by connecting your computer to the port and browsing to a website.  If you can reach the Internet, the phone should be able to register.

  3. Check the router's DHCP settings.  Do you have enough IP addresses available?  Please read our Network Configuration article for an example of administering a SOHO router.  Fonality does not provide network support for customer-provided networking equipment, but we try to provide similar examples that point you in the proper direction.

  4. Check the type of cable.  If you didn't use the Ethernet cable provided with your phone, did you accidentally use a cross-over cable?  Hold the two ends of the cable next to each other.  The colored wires inside the plastic head should match in order from left-to-right.  Make sure you view each cable head from the same side.
