Configure DNS

 

For SIP gateway lookups when the gateway IP Address is not known, you can configure DNS servers to locate SIP servers based on the IP address or Host Name. Up to 16 total DNS and ENUM servers combined can be configured. For example, the IMG 2020 supports 16 ENUM servers and zero DNS servers or 16 DNS Servers and zero ENUM servers. Any combination of DNS to ENUM servers is supported as long as the total combined is no more than 16. Lookup for SRV Records is also supported in the IMG 2020. Configure Service or Media IP Address

For the IMG 2020 to be able to communicate with an external DNS Server, an IP address that the DNS Server can utilize to communicate with the IMG 2020 must first be created. This is accomplished by creating and configuring an IP address as a Service or Media IP address.  In this procedure, two IPv4 addresses (1 Service IP, 1 Media IP) and one IPv6 Address (1 Service IP) will be created. It is assumed that the Basic Configurations procedure has been executed and the Physical Node, IP Network, and Logical Interfaces objects have already been created and configured. 

Configure two IPv4 Addresses (1 Service IP and 1 Media IP)

  1. Right click on the Logical Interfaces object and select New Logical Interface. The IP addresses configured to communicate with the IMG 2020 can be configured on any of the logical interfaces (Control, Data A, or Data B). In this procedure however, all the IP addresses will be configured to the Control Interface. In the Interface field, select Control from the drop down menu. For more information on this object, refer to the Logical Interface topic.

  2. Right click on the Control object and select New IP Address. Select Services from the drop down menu of the Source Endpoint field.

  3. Select IPv4 from the drop down menu of the Address Type field.

  4. Enter the IP address that will be given to the Services IP address being created. This IP address will be entered using the IPv4 format.

  5. Enter the Default Gateway IP address into the Default Gateway field. Refer to the IP Address topic for more information on configuring the remaining fields in this object.

  6. Right click on the Control object again and select New IP Address. Select Media 0 from the drop down menu of the Source Endpoint field.

  7. Select IPv4 from the drop down menu of the Address Type field.

  8. Enter the IP address that will be given to the Media 0 IP address being created. This IP address will be entered using the IPv4 format.

  9. Enter the Default Gateway IP address into the Default Gateway field. Refer to the IP Address topic for more information on configuring the remaining fields in this object. In this procedure a Service IP address 10.129.50.50 and a Media 0 IP address 10.129.60.50 were created.

Configure one IPv6 Address as Service IP address

  1. Right click on the Control object again and select New IP Address. Select Services from the drop down menu of the Source Endpoint field.

  2. Select IPv6 from the drop down menu of the Address Type field.

  3. Enter the IP address that will be given to the Services IP address being created. This IP address will be entered using the IPv6 format.

  4. Enter the Default Gateway IP address into the Default Gateway field. Refer to the IP Address topic for more information on configuring the remaining fields in this object. In this procedure the address 1234:5678:9abc:def1:2345:6789:abcd:0111 was created.

At this point there are two Service IP Addresses and One Media 0 IP address configured. These IP addresses will be used to communicate with the DNS Servers configured. Refer to the IPv6 / IPv4 Overview topic for information on configuring IP addressing using IPv4 or IPv6. 

Configure DNS Server

Configure a DNS Server that the IMG 2020 will communicate with. In this procedure, two external DNS servers are configured. One communicating using IPv4 and the second utilizing IPv6.

  1. Right click on the Dialogic object and select New External Network Elements. The External Network Elements object is a container object. No configuration is needed here. Refer to the External Network Elements topic for more information on this object.

  2. Right click on the External Network Elements and select New DNS Servers. The DNS Servers object is a container or parent object also and no configuration is required here. Refer to the DNS Servers topic for more information on this object.

  3. Right click on the DNS Servers object and select New DNS Server. In the Name field, either accept the default or enter a name that identifies the DNS server being configured. In this procedure, the default DNS_Server0 was accepted.

  4. Select IPv4 from drop down menu of the IP Address Type field.

  5. Enter IP address of the DNS Server using the IPv4 format. In this example the DNS Server has an IP address of 10.129.50.51 so that was entered into the IP address field.

  6. Right click on the DNS Servers object again and select New DNS Server. In the Name field, either accept the default or enter a name that identifies the DNS server being configured. In this procedure, the default DNS_Server1 was accepted.

  7. Select IPv6 from drop down menu of the IP Address Type field.

  8. Enter IP address of the DNS Server using the IPv6 format. In this example the DNS Server has an IP address of 1234:5678:9abc:def1:2345:6789:abcd:0222 so that was entered into the IP address field.

  9. In this example, two DNS Server objects were created. Refer to the DNS Server topic for more information on configuring the remaining fields in this object. 

Configure DNS Client Server Associations

The next step is to configure the DNS Server Association object. This object configures the IP address that will be used to communicate between the IMG 2020 and the DNS Server.

  1. Right click on the IP Network object and select New DNS Clients. The DNS Clients object created is a parent or container object and no configuration is needed here. Refer to the DNS Clients topic for more information on this object.

  2. Right click on the DNS Clients object just created and select New DNS Server Associations. The DNS Server Associations object is also a parent or container object. Under the DNS Server Associations object multiple the DNS Server Association objects can get created. Refer to the DNS Server Associations topic for more information on this object.

  3. Right click the DNS Server Associations object and select New DNS Server Association. Select from drop down menu of the IP Address Type field IPv4. Once selected, only IPv4 formatted IP Addresses configured on the IMG 2020 will be displayed in the IP address field.

  4. Select from drop down menu of the IP Address field, the IP Address that the IMG 2020 will utilize to be able to communicate with the DNS Server that will be configured from the DNS Server field in this object. If IPv4 was selected, only IPv4 addresses will be displayed. If IPv6 was selected, only IPv6 addresses will be displayed.

  5. Select from drop down menu of the DNS Server field which DNS Server will communicate with the IP address selected in the previous step. At this point, the IPv4 address 10.129.50.50 configured as a Service IP address will communicate with the DNS Server selected in the DNS Server field.

  6. Right click the DNS Server Associations object again and select New DNS Server Association. Select from drop down menu of the IP Address Type field IPv6. Once selected, only IPv6 formatted IP Addresses configured on the IMG 2020 will be displayed in the IP address field.

  7. Select from drop down menu of the IP Address field, the IP Address that the IMG 2020 will utilize to be able to communicate with the DNS Server that will be configured from the DNS Server field in this object. If IPv4 was selected, only IPv4 addresses will be displayed. If IPv6 was selected, only IPv6 addresses will be displayed.

  8. In this procedure there were two DNS Server associations configured. One was an IPv4 and other was IPv6. Refer to screen captures below displaying the two Server Associations.

Configure DNS Client

Configure the DNS Client object. This object configures the IMG 2020 to be a client of the DNS Servers created above.

  1. Right click on the DNS Clients object again and select New DNS Client. Either enter a name for this DNS Client in the Name field or accept the default. In this procedure, the default DNS_Client0 was accepted.

  2. Enter the domain name in the Domain Name field.

  3. For each field, Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary DNS Server, select a DNS Server form the drop down list. Each DNS Server field will be populated with the names of the DNS Servers configured above. Either IPv4 or IPV6 addresses can be selected. The IMG 2020 will convert the addresses internally. Refer to screen capture below where just the primary and secondary DNS Server Association fields are populated.

Add DNS Client IP Addresses to SIP Signaling

The last step is to configure each of the IP addresses that were configured in the DNS Client object as Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary DNS Server Associations to be SIP Signaling IP addresses.

  • Right click on the IMG 2020 physical node object and select New Signaling. The Signaling object is a parent or container object. Under this object, multiple SIP signaling IP addresses can be configured. Refer to the Signaling topic for more information on this object.

  • Right click on the Signaling object and select New SIP. In the IP Operation Mode field, select Multiple IP. Refer to the SIP Signaling - SIP topic for more information on configuring the remaining fields in this object.

  • Right click on the SIP object and select New SIP IP Address. Select from drop down menu of the IP Type field whether the IP address being configured is using the IPv4 or IPv6 format.

  • Select from the IP Address field the IPv4 formatted IP address. This IP address had been previously added to the DNS Server Association object in either the Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary DNS Server Assoc. fields.

  • In the DNS Client field, select the DNS Client that was configured above.

  • In the DNS Query Mode field, select the DNS Query Mode will be A ONLY, SRV ONLY, or a MIX of both. Refer to screen capture below.

 

  • Right Click on the SIP object and select New SIP IP Address again. This time, select IPv6 from the IP Type field.

  • Select from the IP Address field the IPv6 formatted IP address. This IP address had been previously added to the DNS Server Association object in either the Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary DNS Server Assoc. fields.

  • In the DNS Client field, select the DNS Client that was configured above.

  • In the DNS Query Mode field, select the DNS Query Mode will be A ONLY, SRV ONLY, or a MIX of both. Refer to screen capture below.

 

The IMG 2020 is now configured as displayed in the DNS Configuration tree displayed at the beginning of this topic.
