Introduction

What is Connect?

Fonality, in the business of IP PBX phone systems since 2004, has spent the last four years perfecting the IP PBX experience for customers.  In 2004, high-speed Internet service was not available in as many locations as it is today.  Because VoIP technology depends on the Internet to function, Fonality created a premise IP PBX solution called PBXtra.  

By installing hardware within a customer's facilities, any Internet short-comings to that particular location were eliminated - all the critical functionality lives within the server.  Now that high-speed Internet is available in many more places across the country, and the quality of these connections have increased significantly, the time for fully hosted solutions like Connect has arrived.  

Why is the Internet so important?

All companies that offer a VoIP product are dependent on the quality of a customer's Internet connection for service and functionality.  The higher the speed of the Internet connection, the more information that connection can carry.  Phone calls that use the Internet require a lot more from the Internet connection than simply browsing the Internet.  

Phone calls take place instantly - as soon as you speak, the other party should hear your words, regardless of the physical distance between the two of you.  By contrast, the Internet delivers information quickly - but not instantly.  If you load a web page into your web browser, it may take 5 to 10 seconds for all the graphics and text on the page to appear.  

For customers who live in more rural areas, and whose Internet connections are still slower than that of larger cities like New York or LA, the content of a web page may take longer than 10 seconds to completely load.  Phone calls cannot be subject to this limitation - if you had to wait longer than 10 seconds to hear every word of a phone conversation, you would be very frustrated!

How does Connect use the Internet?

Phone calls made using Fonality's Connect service use a codec known as g.729.  The g729 codec uses only 8 kbps of your Internet connection to carry audio from your telephone to the other party's telephone.  Most residential customers nowadays have Internet connections of 3 Mbps or higher.  That's 3000 kbps - and Connect only needs 8!  If you run a business out of your home office, you can use your Connect phone service and continue to use the Internet on your computer without noticing any sluggishness.
