Business Voice - Customer Provided Switches
Overview
A customer can use their own managed LAN switches, so long as they support and are correctly configured for the requisite network technologies used in Sangoma deployments. There are multiple Sangoma customers in the field running on HP ProCurve, Cisco Catalyst, Juniper, and Dell switches without issue.
There are three main questions to ask to ensure a successful installation using customer-provided switches:
VLAN / QOS Support:
Does the switch support VLAN's (IEEE 802.1Q) and COS (802.1p)? If not, Sangoma will neither give an engineering signoff to the design nor commit to supporting the solution running over that switch. Note that non-compliant switches can still be used alongside VOIP-appropriate switches in order to provide port density for non-voice devices such as servers and printers. Sangoma's design requirement is that no VOIP traffic traverse those non-VOIP-compatible switches however.
Scope of Support:
Who is the responsible party for configuring and supporting the switch? Configuration can be performed by the customer or by the partner (or one of their designees), assuming they are familiar with that hardware. Configuration work on customer-provided switches will only be performed by Sangoma under the terms of a paid Professional Services engagement as specified in a Statement of Work. Note also that Sangoma's Technology Support Group only provides direct support for LAN switches that are provided by Sangoma. The Sangoma Technology Support Group will not log into or troubleshoot a customer-provided switch.
PoE Support:
Does the switch provide IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE)? If not, the IP phones will need to have power supplies quoted. Note that another option for providing power with a non-PoE switch is to use a third-party PoE injector, however Sangoma neither provides injectors nor recommends a specific vendor.
The switch configuration should define a port for the StarBox® Voice Optimized SD-WAN LAN 3 interface that is tagged for VLAN's 41 and 42 (voice and WAN Failover, respectively) and untagged for the data VLAN (1 by default). Ports with IP phones connected should be tagged for VLAN 41 and untagged for the data VLAN (41 and 1, respectively). All ports should be configured to trust / honor COS. Note that the voice VLAN can be changed to a custom VLAN other than 41, however doing so requires custom configuration and additional administrative overhead, and is not recommended by Sangoma unless absolutely necessary.
Sangoma provides sample configs for equipment partners have encountered in the field, with the disclaimer that configuration commands can vary based on hardware and software, and that Sangoma provides them as-is. The party configuring the gear accepts responsibility for backing up their configs and for adapting sample configs to their environment. The Sangoma Sales Engineering team is available to assist with questions on these configs and on solution design in general, and can be reached at (941) 888-9111 or by emailing SalesEngineering@sangoma.com.
