Polycom Reboot with Cisco 3550 PoE

This problem was discovered while working with a Cisco 3550 PoE, but can apply to any similiar PoE.

Problem: When a Polycom phone is performing a firmware upgrade, it will get stuck in a reboot cycle forever.

Cause: When a Polycom phone is performing a firmware upgrade, it temporarily disables the ethernet port on the phone. The Cisco PoE, detecting this port is "disconnected", stops serving power. Thus, the Polycom phone loses power and reboots.

Solution 1: Use a power supply for the Polycom phone.

Solution 2: Program the PoE to keep serving power for the initial 5 minutes of the ethernet port going up.

For the Cisco 3550, an example of the command would be:

int range fa0/2 - 24 power inline delay shutdown 20 initial 300

*The command above is for reference only. Please get a trained Cisco techincan to configure your Cisco router and switches.
