Overview

ATAs (Analog Telephone Adapters) connect traditional analog telephones, fax machines and similar customer-premises devices to digital telephone systems or voice over IP networks. ATAs are often built with an internal or external power adapter, an Ethernet port to connect to an IP network, one or more foreign exchange station (FXS) telephone ports and foreign exchange office (FXO) interfaces for providing alternative access to traditional land-line telephone service, and a USB port for connecting the device to a personal computer.

This article describes how to add an ATA device to a Business Voice system.

The Business Voice systems support a wide variety of Analog Terminal Adapter (ATA) devices from several manufacturers, including Grandstream, Poly / Obi, and Cisco. These devices can connect a customer’s Business Voice system to analog phone lines, analog telephones, and other analog devices.

Each connection on an ATA device is called a port, and there are two types of ports. FXO ports are used to connect an analog phone line, usually used for emergency backup in the event of an Internet connectivity failure. FXS ports are used to connect legacy analog telephone devices, including analog phones and fax machines.

Some devices provide only FXS ports, others provide FXO ports, and some deliver a mix of the two. The following article provides a list of the supported ATA devices. Click HERE to open the article.
