EdgeMarc 4500T4 router with Bandwith.com

To set up remote phones with Bandwith.com you must have a third-party VoIP-friendly router, such as a Linksys RVS4000, in addition to the Bandwidth-supplied EdgeMarc.

If the EdgeMarc is your only router, there's no supported way on one IP address to disable the SIP ALG (Application Layer Gateway) without also disabling QoS (Quality of Service).  http://Bandwidth.com has explicitly stated that "remote phones are an unsupported configuration."

The easiest workaround (and also one that Bandwidth does support) requires a third-party router in
addition to the EdgeMarc.

The EdgeMarc has four ports - we ask Bandwidth to pass the public Internet (one IP address) directly to the customer-supplied router on one port, and the you use that for remote phones and their regular Internet connection. Then Bandwidth configures another port on the EdgeMarc to have a static ip address on the same local network as the PBXtra server.

E.g. Internet -> EdgeMarc -> port 1* and port 2**.

  • - Port 1 (public IP) -> customer Linksys router -> LAN (private IP, e.g. 192.168.0.1) -> PBX/phones/etc.

  • - Port 2 (private IP, e.g. 192.168.0.2) -> customer LAN or switch -> PBX/phones/etc.
